Hello Friends,
My trip home came and went in the blink of an eye (hehe). My busy gigging schedule contributed mostly to that. It was highlighted by the Hot Hawaiian Nights show on 7/9. I was a bit neverous and concerned that we didn't have another rehearsal, but it turned out really well and everyone did their thang. It was a blast, especially playing the new material with a band for the first time. Uncle Kats, Pi'i, Jason and uncle Creed - I owe you one! It was really cool to have Lei and Jon (and friends) come down and support us too.
We also did two shows in Maui. We played at Ono's, a new place in Wailuku. It's a great venue and the people their were great hosts.
I've got both feet back in LA now and will be gigging this weekend around town. Still writing and working with the NY folks.
Aloha!

Howzit!
Things are good. Had a great time back home last month. The Hoku awards were entertaining as usual and Maui was a blast. I did a few gigs out there with Pi’i and “Mr. Showbiz” Kata Maduli. We played for some wonderful people and as always it was good to see Miss Alaka’i. I’m still gigging in Burbank on the weekends and writing songs for my next project, whenever that materializes.
Recommendations:
Movie - “In America” Loved it!
TV – I’m still on “Scrubs.” Might be my favorite sitcom of all time. Can’t wait for the DVD.
Music – Van Hunt: Great neo-soul vibe. Rachael Yamagata: Think Fiona Apple’s first record. Look out for Stevie Wonder’s new record out later this month.
Books – This is hardly a casual read but I’m taking a comparative literature class and I really enjoyed Alexander Pope’s “An Essay on Man.”
Until next time – much love,

Hello!
It's been so long. My journal and I meet again as almost strangers. Let's see, a lot has happened since the last chapter. I've made numerous trips to New York City, which have all been very exciting and fruitful. It's been a methodical process, but things are moving forward. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and the details to myself. Don't want to jinx anything. Once it happens I'll spill the beans.
"One
Foot On Sand" has been doing well. Much thanks to all of you who have picked it up. We'll be shooting a video for the title song in a couple of weeks. So look out for that. Also, the promotional gigs we did in Northern Cali went really well. We received a lot of hospitality and aloha at Tower Records, Sun Jose and Hukilau's. Hope to be back soon!
Beyond that, I've kept busy gigging in Burbank. It's always great to see local people make it out to these gigs. I've also got some regulars and friends that are so supportive and that I look forward to hanging with every weekend. The servers and staff at the venues are equally wonderful!
As a side note, I'm not closely following American Idol this year, but I did catch Maui's own Camile Velasco. No matter the final outcome of the contest I definitely think she has the potential to go beyond the show and develop into an amazing artist. Forget the showy pop-stuff, she has the real qualities that make for a more meaningful musical contribution. Make good choices and keep writing girl!
Up next, I'll be back in Hawai'i at the end of the month. I'll get the gigs posted up soon.
Shoots!

Aloha!
I just returned to the islands a couple days ago and it's nice to be home. My new album will be hitting stores on tuesday so I'm here to promote it as much as possible. Should be fun playing the new material. The gigs will be posted on the homepage shortly (thanks Ed). My friend Pi'i from CHANT will be joining me on a few of the gigs and I'm hoping to steal John Yamasato from his life in real estate for a couple as well. Tonight I'm off to Dave and Buster's to judge a karaoke contest. Should be fun. I'll check back in later.
Spread the word about "One
Foot On Sand". GO BEARS!

Greetings!
Just got back from Japan a couple days ago. It was my first time there and I really enjoyed it. I was met by CHANT and we played at three of the military bases. It was a lot of time spent traveling. My flight there alone was 12 hours. It wasn't too bad though, each seat had
their own TV screen and a number of movies played throughout the flight. CHANT was awesome! They're one of the few groups out there doing something different and real. On top of that, they're a great bunch and we had a fun time just hanging out after the gigs. Cool peeps! The shows were less than full because a lot of the troops were out on ships, but those that came seemed to enjoy it. Hopefully, we'll get back there again soon.
Things on the home-front are good. My mainland prospects are nicely developing, but a decision on my part has to be made soon. I'm definitely feeling a bit of pressure. This might be my one shot, better make the right choice. Once I've decided and things are solidified I'll leak some details and celebrate for a split-second and then the real work begins.
New songs will be posted soon and I promise to get some pics from my recent gigs up. Please
request
"Shake Me"!!! Much aloha!

Hey peeps...
Much has gone on since last i checked in. Let me briefly catch you up. The
video
shoot was quite interesting. As usual things didn't all go as planned. I do have to
thank all my friends who helped out and showed up. I'm very curious to see how the final product looks. It should be on "Overdrive Live" roughly in May. After that I got extremely sick. I was almost seriously wondering if I had caught SARS on the plane ride over. It was bad up to the trip to Boston for the
MIT
gig. I was really stressed about being able to perform. The day of the show my fever had broken but my throat was still killing me and I lost most of my voice. Somehow, I made it through. It was a struggle, but I was able to squeeze out an hour and a half of voice. The people there were great. The students at MIT and surrounding schools in the area put on an excellent show and were good fun to party with afterwards. Much aloha! They also came out to my gig at
Johnny D's. We'll post some pics up soon.
Last weekend I was fortunate enough to play at Mt. St. Mary's lu'au here in LA. They were also really great and very hospitable. Much mahalo to all the girls there! This weekend I'll be heading north to Santa Clara. Should be a good time.
On the other front, I've all of a sudden been getting good feedback and interest in my mainland material. That's been very encouraging and
reaffirming. I'd be more specific but I don't want to jinx anything. I'm really hoping something tangible and positive materializes out of it.
BTW my new favorite show - Da
Ali G Show. Hilarious!
Respect!

Just a quick note...
I had a great class tonight. I finally got to play my music for everyone and I got a very positive reaction. There are some sharp, young, professionals, that are in my class that work in the biz. Hopefully, it could lead to some good things, but at least their appreciation for the music has recharged my battery and I'm going to enjoy that for the moment. It's amazing how subjective music is. Some credible people can have a luke warm or less reaction to the same song that other people love. You just never know who's who until you play it. Got to keep taking that chance.
Also, I'll be answering some of your survey questions in the fan
forum soon. Keep 'em coming! Thanks!

Hello!
Just got home from my Burbank Bar & Grille gig. Got to mention the Gardena crew that drove up again to show their aloha. They always make it a lot more fun. Also, the staff there was really great. It all went well once I got the sound figured out. There is no sound man and at one point the feed-back shook the walls and I had to run back to the soundboard in the middle of my set. That got everyone's attention and was a bit embarrassing. Overall though, it was a good night, my voice just gets tired after the first three hours. Got to build the stamina back up.
As for the new album, "Shake
Me" should be hitting the airwaves soon. Don't be shy if you want to
request
it on KCCN or Island Rhythm. I'll be back in town at the end of the month to shoot a video for Overdrive Live. No gigs planned yet, but I'll keep you posted. I've got some really exciting things going on here in LA regarding my national aspirations. It's too soon to divulge the specifics, but it looks promising. I don't want to jinx it. Thanks to those who filled out the surveys. I really enjoy reading them.
Aloha,

Hey~
This week has been very productive. I've written four songs in the last four days. That might be a record for me (pun intended). I need some more ammo for the new demo I'm working on with a producer here in LA. The feedback has been that I need some "great" songs. It's been the most interesting songwriting experience for me. I don't think it's usually very healthy to approach songwriting with the intention of creating a "hit". However, it's really impossible to completely wipe that from your mind when you know that the more "hit" appeal the A&R at the record labels hear on the demo, the better chances there are for success. Again, this is probably NOT what an artist should have tumbling around in his head while trying to be creative. But, being that it's my future at stake it's slightly hard to get away from for more than a moment. The interesting thing is that songs that have come out have been very personal and different from anything I've written before. They seem unaffected by my
not-so-subconscious need for potential chart toppers. At about 2am the past four nights, I've sat in my bathroom (good acoustics and I pretend the neighbors can't hear me in there) and three hours later, eye's barely open, I got a new song. The titles are- "Simple Man," "Mercury Girl," "Too Much
To Rush" and "This American Life." I might put some clips up to get some of your feedback in the near future.
Also, no word from MTV or Star Search, both of which I auditioned for. That's how it goes, movin' forward!
Stay tuned for the new Hawai'i album Postcard. It hits stores March 25, and listen for the new single "Shake
Me" hitting the airwaves soon. Graphics and audio clips are coming soon thanks to the famous Mr. Ed!
Later all!

Happy belated V-Day! Thanks to those who joined me last night at Burbank Bar and Grill. Good times! There are many things going on these days. My
new
album now has a title and a cover and will be out hopefully by the end of next month. We'll keep you posted with info. The album has five new songs and some of my past favorites. I'll get a song list to Ed soon. I've also had the good fortune of working with a producer out here on a couple of new tracks. We'll see where that leads. Also, I've auditioned for an MTV Spring Break show, the new Star Search and made a couple of connections through my classes. Just trying to make it happen!
New John Mayer live CD is out. Hasn't left my CD player yet. Finally, good luck to Jordan on American Idol this week. Represent bro!!

hey peeps!
well, a lot of things have been going on since i last checked in...i finally sold two songs i wrote to the popular korean group "JTL"...they informed me a week before the deadline that i was also required to produce the music...i was working around the clock for a while, making sure it got to korea in time...the tracks are on the pop-r&b tip and called "let them fall" and "chance on love"...also got a surprise visit from a n '80's, early 90's (i think) pop superstar - stevie b...(i'm sure many of you remember him)...a couple of my friends dance for his shows sometimes... they played him some of my music... he really dug it and wanted to meet me...very cool, charismatic brother...anyway, he'd like me to write a couple of tracks for his new album once he finishes his tour...also, a couple weekends back, i did a show with keahiwai in whittier...always great to see them...those girls are the bomb!...the new material's happening too!..good to see aaron and the band that really made performing fun....
now i'm focusing all my attention and creative juices on my upcoming projects...the hawaiian project is tentatively titled "one foot on sand"...i've been inspired a great deal by a book my mom brought to my attention called "tales from the night rainbow"...the universal truth and untainted wisdom that the ancient hawaiians fostered, before the onset of the tahitians and missionary, was truly sagacious...it is clear, hundreds of years later, few of us are as evolved as they were...i highly recommend it...the authors are pali lee and john koko willis...i'm also working on a song about the beautiful princess ka'iulani...on top of that i'm writing more contemporary material for the other album (more details to come)...
finally sent out new demo packages with some new songs including "native love," which i eluded to in an earlier entry and "friend's ex-girlfriend"...i'll try and get some samples from the new album up as soon as a get something recorded...wish me luck! thanks!

good evening!
results are in...
yes, i have some of the greatest friends and fans around...i may not have won tonight, but i feel pretty damn good having such support...thanks to all of you who voted and who helped spread the word...it nice to know you guys got my back...
i've never really liked talent contests...it's like comparing four quarters and a dollar bill...both equally valuable just in different forms...so going into this i really just saw it as an opportunity to pass out my demo and maybe get some exposure...just sounds like what losers say right?...no, seriously though, of course there was some outer fringe of my mind that wondered "what if?"... but, really, i never expected to win a "singing" contest...
just another road sign on the journey...sometimes i yield, but i never stop...
thanks again everyone!!

hey all!
today was the big day...i played in the
star lounge on 98.7 here in LA...i was pretty excited/nervous about it, but it went really well...the hosts, ryan seacrest and lisa foxx, were very nice...foxxie made sure we were all comfortable and relaxed and ryan kept the atmosphere fun...also, mark mcgrath (sugar ray) was one of the judges...he was very cool and down to earth...good times...the talent level of the competition is very high and it's really a "singer's" competition...i don't consider myself a "singer" but i think my strength is more in my writing, so, getting this far has been quite a blessing...anyhow, i can't say enough about how much i appreciate all of your votes and ed has been such a BIG help getting the word out...you've been a huge help in my career these past years!!...
the winner is announced friday...i'll let you know what happens...keep spreading the word - www.star987.com
thanks!

oh by the way, when you vote and they send you an e-mail to confirm it, some of you you may have to copy and paste the link in your browser...thanks!

aloha all!
ed makes it easier and easier for me to do my entry and it still takes me a while to figure it out...anyway, lets see, back in LA filling my days with a number of things...taking a couple classes to keep my mind active, but i'm really trying to focus on getting my music out here...finished a new song for my demo called "native love"...i tried to incorporate some island instrumentation into it...the feedback so far has been "it's...(uncomfortable pause)...interesting"...not exactly the affect i was looking for, but at least it's different...maybe we can post it up and you guys can check it out...um, i've also began working on writing for traditional hawaiian album that i'll start recording this winter...i've also got an interesting project happening simultaneously...it will have some of my old stuff remixed, some re-done differently and a couple completely new tracks...i'll be a bit more specific when it gets closer...
LA run-ins: saw george clooney, paula cole, and shawn stockman (boyz II men)...never know who you're gonna see here
okay, here are a few of my recent life enjoyments: the new coldplay album is inspiring, watched sitcom "scrubs" for the first time - really clever....oh, my favorite thing now is "this american life"...(showing my nerdiness) it's a show on national public radio...every weekend it's a differnt topic and they have writers, jounalists, comedians, etc., contribute stories...it's wonderful and their website has a catolog of all the shows...i listen to about one a day..one of my favorite writers, sarah vowell, contributes often and i was fortunate enough to see her do a reading from her new book tonight at UCLA...reall funny stuff...
finally, everybody please support our superstar yasmeen...she's
makin' us proud...go buy her album and request "blue jeans" on the radio...thanks!!
much love,

thanks to all of you who gave me feed back and encouragement regarding my new projects...it's nice to have your support...
picked up the new boyz II men cd literally the minute it came out (12:01 am tues.)...love the song "oh well"!...check it out...i'll be updating my gigging schedule soon...aloha!

hey! sorry for the long absence. i know it's been a while. well, since we got this great new look for the site i thought i should do my part and give everyone a quick update. i'm back in the islands for most of the summer trying to fill up my gigging schedule. good to be home! as for recording, i'm pondering a couple of paths. one possible project is to release the music i've been writing and recording for an aspiring national album. i may just release the raw demo tracks straight from my room to your ears
("sip
your wine," "from
afar"). this is the music i feel closest to and have been waiting to share. another possibility is a hawaiian album. i've been wanting to do one for a long time and certain opportunities have presented themselves. well, i'm hoping to hear feed-back from anyone and everyone. just
drop me an e-mail! i read and appreciate them all. thanks for all your continued support! thanks ed!

howdy!
first of all, b-day bash was great! i had alot of fun being a part of the show. much props to KCCN, Bitty and NEOS for making it happen. also, thanks to those of you who made it to the show. playing with the mvp's was quite an honor for me. pati and i were a bit in awe to be on stage with so many island greats.
speaking of birthdays, i just turned 23 on the seventh. it ended on a bit of a sour note though. my car got broken into that night and my precious guitar and almost all my cd's were stolen.... well, hopefully borrowed. i'd love to get them back...no questions asked...i'll even give a monetary reward. my cd collection would take me forever to replenish and my guitar is irreplaceable. i'm sure people think i have money to go out and buy another one, but honestly, i have school loans, rent and car payments that i'm struggling to make every month. it will be a while before i see money from my new album and much longer before i will be able to replace these things. okay, i'm done making my plea. everything else is going really well.
REMINDER: 21 and over...PLEASE COME TO MY RELEASE PARTY ON THE 15, NEXT WED!!! BRING YOUR FRIENDS!!!
thanks and much aloha! -jus

Aloha!
I know it's been quite a while since I've updated this. I'm going to try and get into the habit of updating it once a week or two. These past couple of months I've been locked in the studio working hard to get the new album done. Almost there. By the end of next week it should be completed. Been fortunate enough to work with Mr. Bitty McLean. He flew in from London to produce three tracks with me. Great guy! The album,
"The
Dreaming Kind", will hit stores (fingers crossed) JULY 12. You can hear the first single on some of the Island music stations already. It's a cover of the Extreme song
"More Than Words". Don't be afraid to request
it! I'll tell you more about the album soon and maybe get a few audio clips up. For those of you who have shown interest in my mainland pursuits like with
"Sip
Your Wine", I'll Keep you posted. Thanks! Oh, by the way, the fan club that has been started is legit.
God bless! Justin

Thanks to everyone who bought the new
cd and has come out to support us at the gigs. We definitely appreciate it. We could also use your support by
requesting
our songs on KCCN and 98.5. Right now the song out is "Represent
Right". That would help us out a lot. This week along with our scheduled gigs we'll be on the 98.5 morning show tomorrow and KINE's on Thurs. My performance for BET will be on, on wed. Don't know what time but the show is called "BET Live In LA". Unless you live on a military base or on the mainland though, you probably don't get that station. Finally, on the 30th the song I did called "Angel Of Mine" will be featured on Bay Watch. Also, can't wait to get the Lenny Kravitz Greatest Hits CD. Comes out tomorrow. Lovin' the new song off it called "Again". Check it out.....it's inspiring! Good night! Jus'

At last!!! The
album is finally out. It took a while but it's finally here. I hope everyone enjoys it. We put a lot of effort into making an album we think our fans will like and that we're proud of. There's really something for everyone on the CD.
My life has been pretty exciting these past few weeks. I've taken two trips to the mainland, both with like less than 48 hours notice. The highlight of my first trip was meeting Boyz II Men. I've been wanting to meet them since I was in eighth grade. They are one of the main reason why I started singing. Anyway, it was cool and I wasn't really that awe struck. Being that they're like legends to me I thought I'd be speechless like a little kid meeting Santa for the first time, but I was pretty calm about it.
This last trip which I returned from last night. I performed on "BET Live In LA", which is BET's equivalent to the Tonight Show. It's a long story about how i got on the show so I'll skip that, but after I sang I got a standing ovation and a great response from everyone at the show including the host John Salley. It was pretty exciting and a huge step for me towards taking my music to the next level. Made a lot of good contacts too. i let you know when the show is going to air if any of you have BET.
Just as a side note, rediscovered Fiona Apple's second CD...love it. Favorite new shows this season - Dark Angel, two words "Jessica Alba" and Gideon's Crossing, Andre Braugher is an amazing actor.
Everyone go check out the new CD and e-mail Ed and tell him how great a job he does on this site. The boy's a genius! Oh yeah and keep an eye open for a live chat with me and Jon coming soon.
Thanks! Justin

Howdy folks! Just checking in to let you know the status of the new album. We're very close to completion. Basically, all that is left is mastering the CD. However, we're still waiting for a few tracks to be mixed. So we're looking at a mid-September release. The album is turning out really nice. It's a very eclectic mix. From Hawaiian to reggae to ballads, you name it we got it. I think my fans and fans of the old Pure Heart will both be satisfied.
I'll keep you posted! Aloha!!

WOW!! It's been a while. Sorry people. Thanks for your patience though. Well, I'm back in Hawai'i for the summer working on a new project. Jon Yamasato and I are doing an album together. It's been really great working with him and we're hoping to release it by the end of summer. I'll keep you posted on that. I've got a couple of things in the works on the mainland but nothing for sure yet. Keep your collective fingers crossed for me. I've really been happy with the progression I've made towards developing a unique sound for the mainland that blends a lot of different styles of music that i enjoy. I've also started writing with more integrity and sincerity. More from experience and about things i think and feel. Right now I'm also trying to improve my guitar playing. We'll see how that goes. On another tip i thought I'd plug a few CD's that I really enjoy that haven't found a great deal of commercial success here. The new CD by Makana I think is awesome and the Amel Larreiux CD. They are totally different but equally enjoyable. 'til next time.....Aloooooha!!

Wow, how time flies! I'll be going back home tomorrow. It's been a good experience up here and I'll be back up here for class in the Fall. I'll have a week back in Hawai'i and then I'm off to Guam for a few gigs. That should be fun. I've never been there. My next performance in Hawai'i will be at the FM 100 Birthday Bash. That's always a great show. Got to say thanks to my man Ed for keeping this site happening. He's the man!! Thanks to everyone who has
e-mailed me me and signed my
guest book. I appreciate the support! I'll try and keep up the journal even when I'm back in Hawai'i. See you back home....aloha!

This has been quite an eventful weekend. I went that party I mentioned last time and it was great. Me and my friend Jeff, a very talented guy in his own right, provided many hours of entertainment. I mostly just backed him up on the 'uke, but I did sing a number of songs as well. It was a fun jam session. The house was really nice. Complete with pool, Jacuzzi and even a Godzilla pinball machine. The people there were really friendly and the food was good too. Quite a few people contributed to the entertainment. There was some beautiful hula from a number of people including
former
Miss Universe Brooke Lee. The whole thing was really great. The next day a got some great news about a possible career opportunity. I don't want to say anything until it happens though. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I also got to thank this up and coming singing duo "Intrigue" for the info they hooked me up with. Look for them in the future!
I'll get some pictures of the party up soon. God bless!

Another week has flown by. All is well here in LA. It warmed up quite a bit this week. That was nice. I hope everyone had a good Mother's Day. Speaking of mothers, my mom politely pointed out that I made some spelling errors in these entries. I don't have spell check so you'll all have to bear with me. I just finished a paper for my music publishing class. It's not due for a while but I wanted to get it out of the way. This weekend I'll be playing at a Lei Day party. It's at Chris Lee's house. He's from Hawai'i and has been very successful here in the movie industry. I'm really looking forward to it. It's the first time I've performed since I left Hawai'i. On the following Monday, my friend Jevan, from KOS, will be in town. I'll be getting pretty busy. Thanks to all of you who sign my guest book and e-mail me. I don't always have a chance to write back but I do read them all and appreciate them very much! Aloha, Justin

Aloha!
It's cold!! The weather here has been schizophrenic. It was hot for a few days and then went right back to FREEZING! Well, it's freezing to me anyway.
Another week of school has been completed. Yesterday, I finally got a chance to pick up the suggested books for my acting/improv class. I never realized how much of a skillful artform it really is. Just like anything else it requires practice and dedicated studies.
Everything's pretty cool. The house I'm staying at is totally empty right now, besides my room. My friend who rents the place has yet to move in. I'm getting more and more comfortable with the solitude though.
I just received a copy of the new Pure Heart CD. It's 'DA BOMB!! I think everyone should own at least 2 or 3 copies of it! (hint, hint) I'm pretty happy with the vocals I added to "Land Of The Sea and Sun". Overall it's just a great product.
Until next time....Love, peace and groove!! 'Jus

Today makes a week and two days since I arrived in Los Angeles. Everything is going as planned and I, surprisingly, haven't experienced much homesickness yet. The weather is warming up a bit. Which is a relief. My classes are for the most part interesting. My acting class is very cool. It's all based on improvisation. Although it can be a little uncomfortable, you just force yourself to participate and afterwards you feel good. The teachers are really fun too. My music publishing class is on the bland side. There are a number of lawyers taking the class and it's very technical. I may not learn it all but I think I will definitely take some important knowledge away from it. My music history class is funny. It's a class on chamber music and I'm the only one in there under the age of 65. I swear it's like a walk into a retirement home. It's cool though, maybe their wisdom will rub off on me.
My truck comes in tomorrow so I'll probably move in to my permanent house soon. Right now I'm staying with my friend in Westwood.
That's all for now. 'Til next time Aloha!
